How We Match Beard Styles to Face Shapes

Updated

In short

Face-shape detection estimates relative facial proportions in the browser. A rule-based mapping then identifies beard styles that may balance those proportions. The generated image is a photorealistic styling preview, not a guarantee of real beard growth.

1. Face-shape estimation

The tool uses Google MediaPipe Face Landmarker in the browser. It compares facial landmarks around the forehead, cheekbones, jawline, face length, and chin. Those relative ratios produce a leading shape, a confidence estimate, a runner-up, and a full category breakdown.

Measurements are expressed relative to cheekbone width. They are not centimetres and should not be treated as medical or anatomical measurements. Camera angle, lens distortion, lighting, hair, and expression can change the estimate.

2. Beard-style matching

Beard recommendations follow a transparent rule set based on classic barbering principles. Each face shape is assigned styles that add length, width, or softness where the face may benefit from visual balance. The first result is the strongest match in that rule set; the next options are alternatives with different visual effects.

The rules do not evaluate beard density, hair direction, skin sensitivity, workplace requirements, or personal preference. Users should compare styles and choose what fits their real growth pattern.

3. Photorealistic generation

When a user requests an AI design, the selected portrait and a lower-face editing guide are sent temporarily for image generation. The prompt first removes existing facial hair and then applies the selected style. Identity, face shape, lighting, and background are intended to remain consistent.

Generated hair texture and density are illustrative. They cannot predict exactly how a real beard will grow or how it will look after several weeks. The result is best used to compare silhouette and direction before a haircut or beard trim.

4. Privacy boundaries

Face detection happens locally. AI generation requires a temporary upload, and this workflow is disclosed in the Privacy Policy. BeardStylesForMen does not store source photos in its own database.

5. Editorial standards

Guides are written for general styling decisions and reviewed against the recommendations used by the tool. We avoid medical claims and describe uncertainty when a result is borderline. Guides show a visible update date, and material changes to the matching method should be reflected on this page.
